Paranoia Never Sleeps

When I come across stories that begin with “Autism Boy” or “Nonverbal Child” I often hesitate to look into them knowing that they will most likely hit close to home, but tale of woe reported from Peoria, Arizona rings too familiar, accentuating the paranoia that had kept me sleepless for over a decade. Here are the broad strokes: a behavioral therapist was arrested for kicking a nonverbal five-year old autistic child in the face during an ABA session.
I have always said that raising a nonverbal child with profound autism is an ordeal I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. Taking into account this report from a few weeks ago, it is apparent that surveillance cameras are paramount for those who are nonverbal and cannot speak for themselves. I have felt this way since Dante’s diagnosis, and I feel this way now. My heart goes out to that little boy’s family, but most importantly, to that five-year old who suffers silently every day, and who was betrayed by a person who was supposed to help him.
